Rooney is likely to have the armband for United’s opening Premier League fixture against Swansea City in less than two weeks’ time, as main rival for the position Robin van Persie is unlikely to be fit to play, but this does not mean that he has the position nailed down for the long term.
Van Gaal is, however, wary of handing the armband to Van Persie on a long term basis due to the Dutchman’s propensity to injury, despite the striker having captained his Netherlands side at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Centre back Jonny Evans has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the position, but it is not even certain that the Northern Irishman will be first choice in the centre of defence.
This all leaves Rooney as the clear frontrunner, particularly as he has been a model professional during United’s tour of the USA, but van Gaal’s mind remains open for the time being at least.
